Waste

FACT: In 2008 Hastings residents recycled 4000 tonnes of material through the kerbiside collection and 2500 tonnes through recycling centres.

That’s the equivalent of 450 transfer station trucks of rubbish diverted from landfill!

All of us create some form of waste. You can divert over half of your household rubbish from landfill by following these easy tips, and save yourself money in rubbish disposal costs by recycling for free!

Reduce

Reduce the amount of rubbish your household generates by buying concentrates and refills, or buying in bulk – these give you more product for less packaging, and less packaging means less rubbish.

You can also reduce your rubbish by using reusable shopping bags, a lunchbox and a reusable coffee cup instead of takeaway packaging, and by placing a ‘no junk mail’ sign on your letterbox.

Reuse

Your trash could be someone else’s treasure. Give away your unwanted items to charity shops or sell them at a pawn shop or trademe and reduce your rubbish that goes to landfill.

You can also take your unwanted goods to the Henderson Road Recycling Depot to be reused. Be creative and think about what you can reuse in your home – envelopes, containers, plastic bags – the list goes on.

Recycle

A lot of your rubbish can be recycled for FREE instead of going to the landfill!

The following materials are collected weekly from your kerbside;

  • paper and cardboard
  • glass bottles and jars
  • plastic (grades 1 & 2)
  • aluminium and tin cans

Hastings recycling collection is on the same day as the rubbish collection. Your recycling needs to be ready by 7.30am on the kerbside.

You can also take your recycling to any Council Refuse Transfer Station free of charge.

Compost or use a worm farm

Almost half of the average Hastings rubbish bag could be composted. Composting food and garden waste saves space at your local landfill, and by using fewer rubbish bags you will save money.

A good way to reuse your food waste is in a compost heap, a worm farm or bokashi; they produce great fertilizer for your garden. You can find out how to make a worm farm and download a free composting and worm farming booklet from the Hastings District Council

If you create a lot of green waste but don't want to compost it yourself, there are several local companies who offer green waste collection services.

Buy pre-loved, or recycled products

Buying products that are recycled, have recycled content or are second-hand can help to reduce the volume of waste that goes to landfill.

Also consider hiring an item instead of buying if you are only going to use it once or twice a year. Buying goods made from recycled materials helps to establish viable markets for that waste stream.
